The Village of Heritage Trails will bring 640 long-term care spaces to Oakville, with its first residents expected in summer 2028.
North Oakville is getting a new seniors’ community.
Schlegel Villages has officially broken ground on The Village of Heritage Trails, a new long-term care development located near Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital.
The project represents a $285 million investment in its first phase and will introduce two connected long-term care homes with a combined capacity of 640 residents.
Construction is underway, with the first residents expected to move in during the summer of 2028.
Where Will The Village of Heritage Trails Be Located?
The development is located at 2165 Dundas Street West in north Oakville, near Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital.
According to the Town of Oakville’s planning records, the first phase consists of two ten-storey long-term care buildings containing a total of 640 beds.
The development is being built on previously unused provincial land made available through Ontario’s Surplus Lands program.
The program allows unused government properties to be repurposed for long-term care, housing and other community infrastructure.
What Will the New Seniors’ Village Include?
The first phase will consist of two connected long-term care homes, each accommodating 320 residents.
Of the 640 long-term care spaces:
- 554 will be new spaces.
- 86 will be upgraded spaces.
Each home is designed around smaller residential neighbourhoods rather than one large institutional setting.
According to the Ontario government’s August 25 announcement, each building will contain ten resident home areas accommodating up to 32 residents each.
These areas will have their own dining and activity spaces, allowing residents to live in smaller communities within the larger development.
An Indoor Main Street for Residents
One of the more interesting features of the project is its proposed indoor Main Street.
Rather than separating all amenities throughout the buildings, the two homes will be connected at ground level through a shared indoor area.
The plans include:
- A café and library
- A spiritual centre
- A health centre and pharmacy
- A spa
- A corner store
- Common areas for activities and social gatherings
Schlegel Villages uses this Main Street concept in its communities to provide shared spaces where residents, families and staff can gather.
The design is intended to create opportunities for everyday social interaction within the long-term care setting.
Retirement Living Is Also Planned for the Property
The long-term care homes are only the first phase of the proposed seniors’ campus.
Schlegel Villages has confirmed its intention to introduce additional retirement living options as part of the property’s future development.
The longer-term vision includes memory care, assisted living and independent seniors’ apartments.
This would create a community offering different types of accommodation and support for older adults with varying needs.
It is important to distinguish these future plans from the long-term care homes currently under construction.
The confirmed first phase is the two 320-bed long-term care homes. Schlegel Villages has not announced a confirmed opening date for the additional retirement housing in its August 25, 2026 announcement.
Approximately 1,000 Jobs Expected Once Operational
The development is also expected to create employment opportunities in Oakville.
According to the Ontario government, construction is expected to support approximately 700 jobs.
Once the long-term care homes are operational, they are expected to support approximately 1,000 jobs, including positions in nursing, personal support work, nutrition services, programming and administration.
The homes will also participate in Living Classrooms training in partnership with Sheridan College, allowing students to gain practical experience working with residents in a long-term care environment.
When Will The Village of Heritage Trails Open?
The official groundbreaking ceremony took place on August 25, 2026.
Schlegel Villages and the Ontario government have identified summer 2028 as the anticipated opening period for the first residents.
As with any development under construction, the anticipated opening date remains subject to the project’s progress.
What This Means for Oakville Residents
For families with aging parents, long-term care and retirement living are often conversations that happen alongside decisions about housing.
Some homeowners begin considering a smaller property, a condominium or a home that requires less maintenance. Others may be researching care options for a parent who can no longer live independently.
These are different decisions, and long-term care should not be confused with independent retirement living.
The Village of Heritage Trails will initially provide long-term care accommodation, while the additional retirement housing remains part of the site’s future development plans.
